Weekend in Vermont

September 14, 2017September 14, 2017 ~ Caroline ~ Leave a comment

Last Friday, we packed up the kids and drove to Vermont for a weekend of hiking and spiritual retreat at a grand old house called Thendara. The group we joined there -- a motley crew of anglican/episcopal/catholic friends of all ages -- has been gathering for years to hike, reflect, worship, and enjoy big pancake … Continue reading Weekend in Vermont

🇺🇸 Posted with gratitude for the American democratic experiment, disappointment in our deep our division, and anger and sadness that another shooting has occurred today - in the midst of Independence Day celebrations, no less. May we all pay attention, listen, build bridges, and vote carefully as we muddle our way forward together.
I first visited Children’s Island, one of our 7 summer camps, at the very beginning of my Y career 16 years ago, and I was totally captivated by this magical experience: kids riding a boat out to their own private island for summer adventures! Among other things, it was an early illustration for me of the powerful impact a group volunteers can have in the lives of generations of kids… This island is a Y camp because a group of 4 board members back in the 1950’s said: let’s buy it and give it to the Y. I’ve been dying to send my own kids ever since that first visit, and it happened this week! Hugh learned, among many things, that you can *really* miss your mom AND have amazing adventures! When he got off the boat today, he was bursting with pride after being named Seal Pup camper of the week… an honor that came with these very cool sunglasses. 🕶 P.S. Fun fact, the Wingate painting in our living room is of Marblehead harbor and features Children’s Island in the distance!
Ryan joined me in the 4th decade with a midnight toast last night at our old friends’ gorgeous wedding on the cape. Not a bad start to the decade! Love you, always, Ryan, and a huge congratulations to Matt and Sarah!
Last year, we planted 9 Coral Charm Peonies in the formal parterre garden… peonies don’t like to be moved, so they often don’t bloom for a couple years after planting, but we got one surprise bud this year! Swipe to see how they open then fade to a soft apricot color!
Fully transitioned into summer mode this weekend: all meals on the screen porch with a breeze and the latest blooms.
A day in the garden and dinner on the water… feels like summer!

“You’re going to feel like hell if you wake up someday and you never wrote the stuff that is tugging on the sleeves of your heart: your stories, memories, visions and songs — your truth, your version of things — in your own voice. That’s really all you have to offer us…”
